Kel O'Neill is a director, writer and producer working at the intersection of documentary, art and technology. He and his partner Eline Jongsma created PBS’s Emmy-nominated, Webby-honored interactive documentary Empire (New York Film Festival 2013), and were the winners of the inaugural Tim Hetherington Visionary Award for their virtual reality documentary The Ark (Tribeca Film Festival 2016). He is a frequent speaker at events like SXSW, MIT Hacking Arts Festival and Magnum’s Photography Expanded Symposium. In his role at The Economist Media Lab, O’Neill is one part artist in residence and one part explorer—he served as creative lead on the Lab's recent VR documentary Oceans VR: Net Positive, and is currently experimenting with augmented reality technologies like Microsoft's HoloLens. He also serves as an immersive media consultant and mentor at Film Independent, and was the founder of the LA chapter of the global emerging media community StoryCode.
